We firmly believe that the sustainable manufacture of products from refractory metals is not only extremely important for the environment and society, but also for the long-term success of our company. Our sustainability program links into our success story over the past 100 years and sets the course for the future:

  • A high level of social responsibility for the people in our company and our supply chains
  • Efforts to establish material loops in the metal industry that will keep our valuable molybdenum and tungsten materials in circulation
  • The goal of gradually reducing the CO2 emissions of our energy-intensive processes through our own efforts

As part of our group-wide sustainability program, our business areas have defined specific targets and initiatives with the aim of evolving their business models in line with market and customer needs:

  • Plansee wants to build on its position as a sustainability leader in the refractory metals industry and is using its innovative energy to help customers around the world achieve their sustainability targets.

  • CERATIZIT has set itself the goal of becoming the leading company in the field of sustainability in the carbide and cutting tools industry. Key levers for this are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the circular economy.

The Power of Powder

The Plansee Group specializes in processing the refractory metals tungsten and molybdenum using powder metallurgy, which is recognized by the Metal Powder Industries Federation as a resource-saving technology. At the same time, we have a high Tungsten recycling rate and recover, refurbish, reuse and recycle molybdenum products.

Metal powder is compacted sequentially prior to or while exposing it to pressure and heat, at a temperature well below the melting point. This key step in powder metallurgy is a process of thermal densification known as sintering. It allows us to press and sinter powder to near net shapes, eliminating the need to remove much of the material in subsequent steps and thus saving material.
